Profile
Stage 21 Preview
Where: Monaco to Nice on the French Riviera.
Stage Type: Individual Time Trial.
Weather: Touching 30˚ again. Very small chance of rain. Looks to be pretty consistent throughout the day.
Climbs: The third-category La Turbie (8.1km at 5.6%) followed by the short, sharp Col d’Eze (1.9km at 6.8%).
Stage suits: The route includes two significant climbs, so general classification riders are favoured over time trial specialists.
Stage 21 Contenders
Tadej Pogačar (8/11; 1.73) has won five stages of this year’s Tour de France and who would bet against him winning another? Said he’s likely to play it safe on the descents but looks on another planet and should take a lot of time out of the others up the climbs and on the flat.
Remco Evenepoel (2/1; 3.0) won the individual time trial on stage 7 and would ordinarily have Pogačar’s number against the clock. After three weeks of hard racing though, maybe not. Soudal-QuickStep can’t be faulted for the brave attempt to put pressure on Vingegaard on stage 20 even though it ultimately Evenepoel came up short.
Jonas Vingegaard (7/1; 8.0) has had an incredible race given the circumstances and, like Pogačar, and Evenepoel for that matter, is unlikely to want to have a prang on one of the tricky descents. Saw last year what an excellent time triallist he can be though clearly not quite on that form here.
João Almeida (33/1; 34.0) is riding strongly and is a talented time triallist so it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him hit the frame.
Matteo Jorgenson (50/1; 51.0) is only 24secs ahead of Derek Gee (150/1; 151.0) in eighth place which no doubt he’ll want to defend. Has shown great shape in the final week of the Tour.
Stage 21 Bets
It’s difficult to see past the top two in the betting and you have to side with Tadej Pogačar given his form.
With positions secure and a stage win unlikely, many don’t really have anything to ride for. Matteo Jorgenson does, however, and this may motivate him to a career-high time trial performance.
