Stage 7 Contenders
Remco Evenepoel (1/2; 1.5) says he’s lost 2.5kg since the Dauphiné which will help his climbing but not necessarily his time trialling. Still, he’s the world champion in this discipline and an aero bullet. Has a big chance to narrow the gap to Pogačar on GC.
Tadej Pogačar (3/1; 4.0) can do a monster TT ride on his day like into Perugia in the Giro d’Italia earlier this year where he beat Filippo Ganna or famously on the TT up La Planche des Belles Filles in 2020 where he crushed Primož Roglič to take his first Tour de France win. Is he at that level now? Probably not quite but should be fun to find out.
Juan Ayuso (16/1; 17.0) was a cheeky bugger on stage 4 where he appeared to put his shoulder to the wheel for Pogačar but then sat back in and allowed Almeida to do all the work before dropping him on the descent. No doubt he had some kind of plausible deniability, but it looked pretty rotten and there were surely some frank words exchanged on the team bus after. Beat Ganna in Tirreno-Adriatico earlier this earlier so clearly has big chances.
Jonas Vingegaard (25/1; 26.0) isn’t at the level of last year when he put 1min 38secs into Pogačar on the pivotal TT. Price looks big considering that though.
Primož Roglič (25/1; 26.0) like Vingegaard looks to still be building after the Basque Country crash. Did well against the clock in the Dauphiné and Basque Country this year.
Stefan Küng (28/1; 29.0) struggles to beat the very best but could make the frame.
Wout van Aert (28/1; 29.0) got involved in the sprint for the first time on stage 5 but still isn’t back to his best. Let’s leave Van Aert to the final week.
João Almeida (40/1; 41.0) should be pretty peeved off with Ayuso after his antics on stage 4. Is maybe the second or third strongest rider in the race. Won the TT at the Tour de Suisse. Has a chance here to move up the GC and cement his place as a genuine challenger for the podium.
Stage 7 Bets
It’s a bit of a toss-up between the front two and it should be a great watch, but let’s go for João Almeida for a top 3 finish at a decent price to follow them home. The Portuguese has shown great form since the Tour de Suisse and could put himself into podium contention here.
João Almeida Top 3 @7/1
